A bit about GOONJ..
In a world where issues right from domestic violence to global warming are discussed with equal fervor, there is scant attention to the basic need of clothing. Over the last ten years GOONJ has grown as a mass movement among the urban and rural masses, mobilizing cloth and repositioning it as an important resource for rural India rather than wastage fit only for charity. Today anyone irrespective of educational, income, social or cultural background, is becoming a part of this movement.
In the villages, we started off with the aim of trying to address a basic need, freeing up the meager resources of the recipients, for other pressing needs. Today we are not just addressing a basic need but are using cloth as an entry point into the lives of people; to address other important needs like health, education, employment generation etc.
A. Vastra Samman & School to School; These were pan – India campaigns that GOONJ.. had launched during Joy of Giving Week (2nd -8th Oct). The focus was primarily on newspaper collection apart from other material. These papers would be sold off to raise financial resource for GOONJ initiatives. The entire operations involved recurrent expenses in transportation of material to remote villages, storage space, manpower needed for sorting, packing etc... And that's where this new approach helped GOONJ in generating resources for their work. |

| B. GOONJ....’s 'Rahat' initiative for relief work in Orissa & Sikkim. Large quantities of tarpaulins, dry ration (rice, biscuits), medicines, lanterns, blankets, woolens etc was required to meet the emergency. Even the discarded flex banners would be utilized as tents to cover shanties... |
The response received was very good from all the Staff Members and students from IGBS and ICEM campuses of Indira Group of Institutes! |
